Portrush, Northern Ireland – A local hospitality group in Portrush has found itself at the center of a public relations storm after critically important price increases were implemented across its venues during the ongoing Open Championship. The Ramore Group, which operates popular establishments including the Harbour Bar, Ramore Wine Bar, basalt, and Neptune and Prawn, has faced widespread criticism, notably for a chicken and bacon burger at the Ramore Wine Bar that reportedly jumped from £7.95 to £17.95.
The price of Prestige: A Tale of Two Burgers
The dramatic price adjustment has drawn sharp scrutiny, especially given the influx of over 275,000 spectators expected in Portrush for the prestigious golf tournament. While price fluctuations are often anticipated during major events, the scale of Ramore’s changes quickly ignited debate.
The ramore Group issued a statement acknowledging the “recent conversations around pricing during the Open” and confirmed that menus had been “revised and adjusted” in response.
Investing in the Experience, or Exploiting the Event?
In their statement, the family-run buisness emphasized their commitment to the Portrush community and their desire to provide an exceptional experience for visitors. “As a family-run business proud to be part of the Portrush community, our goal throughout this week is to deliver the best possible experience and ensure safety for those visiting,” the statement read.
The group detailed significant investments made to accommodate the surge in visitors.”In anticipation of the large influx of guests, we’ve employed over 30+ agency staff to support our kitchens and front-of-house teams, 30+ security personnel operating around the clock to ensure everyone’s safety and more than 20 entertainers performing across our six venues seven days a week,” they explained.
The statement continued,”We have simply been investing more as a business for our customers to ensure enjoyment and safety. Which of course creates additional business bills. We would also like to remind people that there is a family behind this business. A family who are involved every day, trying their very best, and reading every single comment.Everyone can make mistakes, though nobody deserves slander and hatred.”
A Delicate balance: Community Expectations and Business Realities
The situation has highlighted the delicate balance between businesses capitalizing on major events and maintaining community goodwill. Northern Ireland Assembly member Cara Hunter commented on the matter, telling the BBC, “I think that even if some messaging had been put out to say that prices were increasing, it might have been a little less shocking. I also understand Ramore’s viewpoint on this.”
As the Open championship continues, the conversation around pricing and the economic impact on local businesses is likely to remain a talking point in Portrush.
