Iran’s military ordered an Indian-flagged vessel to abandon its transit through the Strait of Hormuz on April 18, 2026, according to video evidence released by Al Jazeera and confirmed by maritime tracking data.

The incident occurred in the early afternoon local time when Iranian naval forces intercepted the commercial ship, identified as the MV Sea Lion, which was en route from Jebel Ali in the United Arab Emirates to Mundra Port in India. Video footage shows Iranian patrol boats approaching the vessel and issuing a directive via loudspeaker to alter course and exit the strait immediately.

Maritime security analysts noted that the Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most critical chokepoints for global energy supplies, with approximately 20% of global oil traded by sea passing through the waterway each day. Any disruption to transit rights in the area raises immediate concerns about regional stability and international shipping safety.

The Indian Ministry of External Affairs confirmed receipt of the incident report and stated it was seeking clarification from Iranian authorities through diplomatic channels. A spokesperson emphasized that India expects all nations to respect the right of innocent passage under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS), to which both Iran and India are signatories.

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy has not issued an official statement regarding the specific incident. However, regional observers pointed to a pattern of increased naval assertiveness by Iranian forces in the strait over the past 18 months, including multiple instances of vessel interceptions and verbal warnings to foreign-flagged ships.

Shipping industry sources said the MV Sea Lion complied with the order and rerouted toward Oman’s territorial waters before resuming its original course after clearing the immediate vicinity of the strait. No damage to the vessel or injury to crew was reported.

As of the evening of April 18, 2026, the vessel continued its voyage toward India under standard maritime monitoring. No further interceptions were reported in the following hours, and normal traffic levels in the strait appeared to resume by late evening.
