Vienna, Austria – A 21-year-old man is facing terrorism-related charges in connection with a planned attack on a Taylor Swift concert in August 2024, Austrian prosecutors announced on February 17, 2026. The alleged plot, which prompted the cancellation of Swift’s three scheduled performances in the Austrian capital, involved preparations for a potential bombing and coordination with other individuals to carry out attacks in multiple countries.

According to a statement released by the Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office, the suspect, a dual citizen of Austria and North Macedonia, allegedly pledged allegiance to the Islamic State (ISIS) by sharing propaganda and videos online. The investigation revealed that the individual began plotting the attack while Swift was still scheduled to perform at Ernst Happel Stadium on August 9, 2024. He was 19 at the time.

Prosecutors allege the suspect actively sought information online regarding the construction of explosive devices, specifically focusing on triacetone triperoxide (TATP), a highly unstable explosive often favored by ISIS. He is accused of obtaining instructions for building a shrapnel bomb and even producing a small quantity of the substance. The suspect reportedly made “several attempts” to illegally purchase firearms outside of Austria with the intention of bringing them into the country.

The scope of the alleged conspiracy extends beyond the planned attack on the Taylor Swift concert. Prosecutors claim the suspect encouraged a 19-year-old Austrian national to carry out a knife attack on a security guard at a mosque in Mecca, Saudi Arabia, in March 2024, an incident that resulted in five injuries. The investigation also uncovered plans for additional terrorist acts in Dubai and Istanbul, involving other individuals who have been separately prosecuted.

The planned attack on the Eras Tour concert was uncovered by Austrian authorities just before the first scheduled performance. Police announced they had foiled a terror plot, leading to the cancellation of all three Vienna shows. Approximately 60,000 people were expected to attend each concert, with tens of thousands of fans traveling to the city. The speed of ticket sales for the Vienna dates was unprecedented in Austrian history, selling out within hours of going on sale in July 2023.

The suspect was arrested in August 2024 and has been in custody since. He is now formally charged with terrorist offenses, membership in a criminal organization, and related crimes. If convicted, he faces a potential prison sentence of up to 20 years.

The investigation revealed a network of individuals allegedly connected to ISIS. A Syrian juvenile male in Germany has also been charged for allegedly aiding those involved in the Austrian plot. This highlights the international reach of the alleged terrorist network and the coordinated efforts to disrupt potential attacks.

The incident underscores the growing concern over potential terrorist threats targeting large-scale public events. While authorities were able to prevent the attack on the Taylor Swift concert, the case serves as a stark reminder of the challenges faced by security agencies in protecting crowded venues from potential harm. The swift action taken by Austrian authorities, coupled with information sharing with international partners, including the United States, was crucial in averting a potential tragedy.

The case also raises questions about the radicalization process and the role of online platforms in disseminating extremist ideologies. The suspect’s alleged use of social media to share ISIS propaganda and connect with other individuals involved in the plot highlights the need for continued efforts to counter online extremism and prevent the spread of terrorist content.

The Vienna Public Prosecutor’s Office plans to proceed with the criminal case against the suspect in Wiener Neustadt, a town near Vienna. The case is expected to draw significant attention, not only due to the high-profile target – Taylor Swift – but also because of the broader implications for counterterrorism efforts in Europe and beyond.
