Vienna Public Transit Adjustments: Line Changes and Stop Relocations

Vienna’s public transportation network, known for its efficiency and accessibility, is undergoing a series of adjustments impacting several tram and bus lines. These changes, some temporary and others more permanent, are set to begin Tuesday, February 10, 2026, and will continue through Sunday, February 15, 2026, according to announcements from Wiener Linien.

Tram Line Diversions

Significant diversions are planned for several tram lines. Line D will experience diversions in both directions between Schwarzenbergplatz and Börse, rerouting via Schwedenplatz. Line 1 will also be diverted in both directions between Karlsplatz and Julius-Raab-Platz, utilizing Schwarzenbergplatz and Stubentor as alternative routes. Line 2 will face diversions between Rathaus and Schwedenplatz, with trams rerouted via Schottentor.

Line 71 will see a reduction in its operational range, running only between Kaiserebersdorf, Zinnergasse and Schwarzenbergplatz. Passengers relying on this line for travel beyond Schwarzenbergplatz will need to seek alternative transportation options.

Bus Line Adjustments and Service Reductions

Bus line 2A will begin a phased service reduction starting at 6:50 PM on February 10, 2026. All buses arriving at Schwarzenbergplatz after this time will be withdrawn from service and returned to the depot. Line 59A will also experience reduced service, operating only between Bhf. Meidling S U and Bärenmühldurchgang from approximately 7:00 PM onwards.

Night Bus Stop Relocation

Passengers utilizing Vienna’s night bus network should be aware of temporary stop relocations affecting several lines. Stops for lines N25 (towards Großfeldsiedlung), N38 (towards Grinzing), N60 and N66 (towards Ring/Kai), N71 (towards Kaiserebersdorf), and N75 (towards Gasometer) will be moved.

The relocation, effective from midnight on February 10, 2026, and lasting until approximately 5:00 AM on February 13, 2026, will see stops moved from Opernring, vor der Oper to Kärntner Ring 1–3. However, the relocation for line N71 will extend to 5:00 AM on February 15, 2026, due to diversions via Schwarzenbergplatz. This diversion also impacts lines N60 and N66 during the same period.

Wiener Linien regularly adjusts stop names to improve clarity and passenger orientation, as part of an ongoing process. A recent renaming of 37 stops took effect on February 2, 2026, with changes including simplified names and adjustments to avoid confusion. Examples include the renaming of the stop on Line 1 from Troststraße to Knöllgasse, Troststraße, and changes to stops on Lines 1 and 7A near Davidgasse and Knöllgasse.

These adjustments come as Vienna continues to invest in its public transport network, which is known for its affordability, frequency, and cleanliness. The system operates on an honesty system, with limited formal ticket checks, but passengers are reminded that traveling without a valid ticket can result in a fine. The network encompasses the U-Bahn (subway), Schnellbahn or S-Bahn (local train), Straßenbahn (tram), and Autobus (bus), all covered by the same ticketing system.

As of January 1, 2026, Vienna has implemented a new fare structure, and 48 and 72-hour tickets, along with single tickets for seniors, have been discontinued, with a greater focus on digital ticketing options.
