Vietnam is bracing for the impact of Typhoon bualoi, a rapidly intensifying storm that is already causing widespread disruption. Airports have been closed and thousands of residents have been evacuated from vulnerable areas as the typhoon approaches the central coast.
A Storm with Deadly Precedent
The typhoon, wich generated winds of up to 133 kilometers per hour (82 miles per hour) as of Sunday evening, is forecast to make landfall late Monday or early Tuesday. Bualoi’s path follows a devastating course through the Philippines, were it caused at least 10 deaths and significant flooding in recent days, according to multiple news reports.
Rapid Intensification and Broad Impact
Vietnamese weather officials describe bualoi as a notably dangerous storm, noting its unusually fast pace – nearly twice the average speed of similar weather systems – combined with its strength and wide-reaching impact area. The Thanh Nien newspaper, a state-run publication, reported on the approaching storm and the preparations underway.
Preparedness Measures Underway
Authorities are prioritizing the safety of citizens, implementing preemptive measures to minimize potential damage and loss of life. The evacuation of thousands is a key component of this strategy, aiming to move people away from coastal regions and areas prone to flooding. As the typhoon slows as it nears the coast, the risk of prolonged heavy rainfall and storm surge increases, necessitating continued vigilance.
