Vietnam Requests International Support for Fishermen Amidst Storm Soulik
Vietnam has requested China and other countries to provide assistance to Vietnamese boats and fishermen operating at sea who are unable to return to the mainland in time to take shelter and avoid the storm.
At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on September 19, the press inquired about coordination with other countries in supporting Vietnamese fishermen and boats in the face of storm No. 4 (international name Soulik).
Pham Thu Hang, Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the Government has issued several dispatches, including one on September 19, in which the Prime Minister signed a dispatch requesting focused direction to respond to storm No. 4 and floods.
The Prime Minister emphasized the importance of implementing key tasks to promptly and effectively respond to storm No. 4, which is making landfall.
Implementing the direction of the Government leaders, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Vietnamese representative agencies in China and neighboring areas urgently worked with local authorities to inform and update information about storm Soulik and requested local authorities to support Vietnamese boats and fishermen operating at sea who could not return to the mainland in time to take shelter and avoid the storm.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs also sent a diplomatic note to the diplomatic representative agencies of the countries in Hanoi to coordinate closely and promptly report back to the country to have necessary support measures in case Vietnamese fishermen or boats need urgent rescue.
The National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting reported that on the afternoon of September 19, storm No. 4 had weakened into a tropical depression. At 5:00 p.m. on September 19, the tropical depression was located at about 16.9 degrees North latitude; 106.6 degrees East longitude, on the Vietnam – Laos border area. The strongest wind was level 6 (50-61 km/h), gusting to level 8.
It is forecasted that in the next 3 hours, the tropical depression will continue to weaken and move west at a speed of 15-20km/h.
