Vietnam Sets Sights on BRICS Membership: What’s at Stake for the Rising Economic Power
Vietnam’s Participation in BRICS: A Step Towards Multilateral Cooperation
Vietnam’s engagement in regional and international multilateral cooperation mechanisms is guided by its interests, conditions, and capabilities.
At the regular press conference of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on October 31, the press inquired about Vietnam’s inclusion in the list of partner countries of the BRICS Group and the prospects of cooperation with this group.
Deputy Spokesperson Doan Khac Viet responded that, as an active and responsible member of the international community, Vietnam has been and will continue to contribute to multilateral mechanisms and forums, promoting peace, stability, and development in the region and the world, in line with Vietnam’s needs and interests.
“Vietnam will study information about the BRICS mechanism. Our participation in regional and international multilateral cooperation mechanisms is always researched and considered on the basis of appropriate interests, conditions, and capabilities,” said Deputy Spokesperson Doan Khac Viet.
Mr. Viet emphasized that this approach demonstrates Vietnam’s consistent foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, multilateralization, and diversification of international relations, as a friend, trusted partner, and responsible member of the international community.
Earlier, on October 23 and 24, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh led a high-ranking Vietnamese delegation to attend the expanded BRICS Group leaders’ conference in Kazan, Russia.
BRICS, established in 2010, initially consisted of Brazil, Russia, India, and China, later joined by South Africa. This year, the bloc expanded to include Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE.
