The “Wonder Sea” vessel was carrying 48 passengers and five crew members when it was caught in a violent storm. The sudden onset of heavy rain and severe weather conditions led to the boat capsizing. By yesterday evening, border guards had successfully rescued 11 people and recovered 34 bodies.overnight, the grim search continued, with three more crew members’ bodies discovered in the submerged cabin. Efforts are still underway to locate the remaining five missing individuals.
One of the rescued survivors, a 10-year-old boy, recounted his harrowing experience to state media outlet VietnamNet. “I took a deep breath, swam through a gap, dived then swam up, I even shouted for help, then I was pulled up by a boat with soldiers on,” he said, describing the terrifying moments of survival.

prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has expressed his deepest condolences to the families of the victims. He has directed the defense and public security ministries to conduct urgent search and rescue operations. A government statement confirmed that authorities will “investigate and clarify the cause of the incident and strictly handle violations.”
Witness Accounts of the Storm
Residents in the Ha Long Bay area described the sudden and intense nature of the storm. Tran Trong Hung, a local resident, reported that the sky turned dark around 2 pm (8 am Irish time). “There were hailstones as big as toes with torrential rain, thunderstorm and lightning,” he stated, painting a vivid picture of the extreme weather.
the severe weather was not isolated to Ha Long Bay. Torrential rain also impacted northern Hanoi, Thai Nguyen, and Bac Ninh provinces, with strong winds causing several trees to fall in the capital. This extreme weather followed a period of intense heat, with temperatures reaching up to 37 degrees Celsius in some regions.
Mai Van Khiem, director of the national Center for Hydrometeorological Forecasting, clarified that the thunderstorms in northern Vietnam were not linked to Tropical Storm Wipha, which is currently gaining strength in the South China sea and is projected to make landfall in Vietnam early next week.
ha Long Bay: A Popular but Vulnerable Destination
Ha Long Bay, celebrated for its emerald waters and thousands of limestone karsts, is a major draw for international and domestic tourists.Millions visit the bay each year to experience its unique natural beauty.
However, the region has experienced maritime incidents in the past. Last year, 30 vessels sank in boat lock areas in coastal Quang Ninh province, adjacent to Ha Long Bay, following Typhoon Yagi, which brought powerful winds and waves. More recently, a ferry sank off the popular Indonesian resort island of Bali this month, resulting in at least 18 fatalities. The latest tragedy underscores the potential dangers posed by unpredictable weather patterns in popular tourist areas.
