Alleged Thief Beaten to Death in Kurigram’s Nageshwari Upazila
A 75-year-old man, Abdul Jalil, was allegedly beaten to death in Kurigram’s Nageshwari Upazila on suspicion of being a thief. The incident occurred in the Bagdanga Fakirtari area of Nageshwari Municipal on Saturday, September 7, around 12:00 pm.
Abdul Jalil, son of Huzur Munsi of Vallabhpur Bhasani market side of the municipality, had previously been accused of stealing but was known to have stopped as he got older. He had recently taken to singing poetry.
According to police and locals, Abdul Jalil was tied up and beaten by locals in the Fakirtari area on Saturday night. Councilor Ashraful Alam of Ward No. 1 informed the police, who rescued Abdul Jalil and sent him to the hospital. Unfortunately, he was pronounced dead upon arrival.
The police have confirmed that there is a complaint of theft against Abdul Jalil, but it is unclear why he went to the village at night. No complaints of attempted theft were received from any family members.
Officer-in-Charge Roop Kumar Sarkar stated, “Locals beat Abdul Jalil, resulting in bruises and blood on various parts of his body. We have made arrangements to send the body to the morgue for an autopsy.”
Regarding the case, OC Roop Kumar Sarkar said, “The family members of the deceased have come to the police station, and they are preparing to file a complaint. If found guilty, we will take legal action.”
