Vijay has assumed office as the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu following a period of political negotiations, as his party, TVK, secures support from a dissident faction of the AIADMK.
The transition of power followed an oath ceremony held on May 11, 2026. During the subsequent proceedings in the legislative assembly, Vijay described the body as the "heart of democracy."
As part of the new government’s formation, Prabhakar has been appointed as the Speaker of the Assembly.
AIADMK Internal Conflict and Split
The formation of the TVK-led government has coincided with a significant internal fracture within the AIADMK. A faction of the party, led by C.Ve. Shanmugam, has formally declared its support for Vijay and the TVK.
This rebellion has created a divide within the party previously led by Jayalalithaa. According to the faction led by C.Ve. Shanmugam, the move to support TVK was prompted by the actions of Edappadi K. Palaniswami.
Shanmugam alleged that Edappadi K. Palaniswami had sought to secure the position of Chief Minister with the backing of the DMK, a claim that has fueled the current split within the AIADMK.
Floor Test and Political Negotiations
Ahead of a crucial floor test to prove majority support, Vijay held meetings with rebel AIADMK leaders who have shifted their allegiance to the TVK.
These negotiations were central to the government’s formation, as the TVK sought to consolidate support from the splintered AIADMK faction to ensure stability in the assembly.
The political shift marks a period of instability for the AIADMK, as the rebellion against Palaniswami continues to brew, potentially altering the balance of power in Tamil Nadu politics.
