Vikings‍ Extend GM Kwesi Adofo-Mensah’s Contract

‍ Updated May 31, 2025

EAGAN, Minn. — The⁢ Minnesota Vikings are banking on continued success under General Manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah, inking him to a contract extension.⁤ The move, announced Friday, comes⁣ roughly five months after coach Kevin O’Connell also secured a new deal,‍ solidifying the team’s leadership for the foreseeable future. The Vikings’ leadership group aims to improve the team’s ⁢ NFL free ⁣agency strategy.

Adofo-Mensah and O’Connell initially signed four-year⁣ deals in 2022. While O’Connell’s extension covers five years, the Vikings did‍ not immediately disclose the length of Adofo-Mensah’s new contract. O’Connell’s deal reportedly maintains Adofo-Mensah’s authority over personnel decisions.

“This organization means so much to me,and I’ve always believed in what we’re building ⁢here,” Adofo-Mensah said. He also expressed gratitude to the Wilf family for their trust and excitement to continue working with O’Connell.

team owner/president⁤ Mark Wilf lauded Adofo-Mensah’s leadership and vision. Wilf said his collaboration with the coaching staff has positioned the Vikings for sustained success. He added that the team is confident that Adofo-Mensah and O’Connell will continue to compete at the highest level.

Alongside the general manager extension, the Vikings announced new titles ⁣for two of Adofo-Mensah’s key⁢ aides, Ryan Grigson and Demitrius Washington, who are now ⁣assistant general managers.

As Adofo-Mensah and O’Connell arrived, the ⁤Vikings boast the NFL’s sixth-best regular-season winning percentage (.667) and⁣ have made ‍two playoff appearances.‌ Though, the team’s NFL draft performance has been less remarkable, ⁢leading ⁣to increased reliance on free agency and trades.

Since 2022, draftees have accounted for only 107 ‍starts for the Vikings, the second-lowest total in ⁣the league, according to ESPN Research.

Adofo-Mensah assembled a strong free agency ‍class in 2024,⁤ adding three Pro Bowlers: quarterback Sam darnold ‌and outside linebackers Jonathan Greenard and‌ andrew van Ginkel. In total,12 new players made ‌at least one ⁣start. This spring, the Vikings again invested heavily in free agents, committing an NFL-high $315 million in cash⁤ for the 2025 roster.

“While we’ve ⁣made significant strides already, our ‌focus will remain on building a team positioned as a perennial contender,” Adofo-Mensah said.

He added that the extension signifies the team is on solid ground with its long-term vision.

Adofo-Mensah, 43, joined the Vikings in January 2022⁤ after a rapid ascent in NFL front offices. A former basketball player ⁣at Princeton, he spent a decade in finance before transitioning⁢ to football. He worked in research and⁢ development for the San Francisco 49ers and⁢ later as vice president of football operations‍ for the Cleveland Browns.

Adofo-Mensah was the first NFL general manager hired primarily for his analytics background. He has implemented a ‌data-driven approach to decision-making ⁢within ‍the Vikings’ front office.

What’s next

the Vikings will continue to focus on building through both free agency and the draft, aiming to create a sustainable ‍contender in the NFC North.
