Updated June 02, 2025
Minnesota Vikings quarterback J.J.McCarthy is benefiting from intense OTA practices, facing a formidable defense and working alongside star receiver Justin Jefferson. The Vikings’ offseason program is designed too accelerate McCarthy’s development as he prepares for a potential starting role.
A recent practice showcased the environment, with McCarthy attempting a pass to Jefferson, only to have cornerback Byron Murphy Jr. tip the ball to linebacker Ivan Pace jr. for an interception. Coach Kevin O’Connell noted Jefferson’s consistent attendance, a change from previous years, and the aggressive nature of Brian Flores’ defensive schemes.
O’Connell emphasized the importance of Jefferson’s presence. “It’s so great to have the participation of Justin and Jordan [Addison] and T.J. [Hockenson],” O’Connell said.”We’ve got a group out there of guys that know what they’re doing, so they can give [McCarthy] some real-time feedback.”
Jefferson’s impact extends beyond his connection with McCarthy. O’Connell noted that Jefferson is ”an energy igniter of the whole building” and that his dedication sets a tone for the entire team. The Vikings have been careful to give Jefferson space in the past, but his increased involvement this spring is seen as a positive sign.

McCarthy acknowledged the need to build timing and chemistry with his receivers. “The timing, those reps, all of that has to be built up over time,” McCarthy said. “So the more reps, the better. I just feel like we’re not where we want to be, but we’re going to be there when we need to.”
The Vikings’ defense is also playing a crucial role in McCarthy’s development. Their aggressive and unpredictable schemes provide a unique challenge for the young quarterback, forcing him to make rapid decisions and adapt to various pressures.
McCarthy appreciates the challenge posed by the defense. “Just being able to go against that scheme,” he said, “you can’t get that anywhere else. And just being able to see that every single day, it’s extremely invaluable.” He also noted veteran safety Harrison Smith’s attempts to “bait us into things,” highlighting the mental aspect of the game that he is learning.
What’s next
The Vikings will continue their offseason program, with McCarthy focused on building chemistry with his receivers and honing his skills against the team’s challenging defense. The goal is to have him ready to lead the team when the regular season arrives.
