Viktor Axelsen, the Danish badminton star and two-time Olympic gold medalist, announced his retirement from professional badminton on April 15, 2026. The 32-year-old athlete cited a persistent back injury that has left him unable to compete or train at the elite level.
Axelsen stated that he did not want to retire but felt forced to make the decision. He revealed that nerve pain in his back had progressed to a point where he could no longer perform basic training exercises on the court.
The decision followed extensive consultation with medical professionals, including the surgeon who performed an operation on him in 2025, as well as other doctors he had been working with to manage his condition.
Medical Challenges and Forced Retirement
The retirement comes after a prolonged struggle with chronic pain. Axelsen had not competed in professional matches since October 2025 due to a back problem that required surgical intervention.

In an effort to prolong his career, Axelsen underwent endoscopic surgery in 2025. Following the procedure, he attempted various recovery strategies, including multiple injections and the implementation of new training methods and treatments.
Despite these efforts, the recurrent nature of the injury made it impossible to maintain the physical demands of professional play. Axelsen described the situation by stating that my body is telling me to stop
.
Today is not an easy day for me. Due to my recurrent back issues, I am no longer able to compete and train at the highest level. Accepting this situation has been incredibly difficult.
