Danish badminton star Viktor Axelsen officially announced his retirement from professional badminton on April 15, 2026. The 32-year-old athlete, a dominant force in the sport, cited a persistent and recurring back injury as the reason for ending his competitive career.
Axelsen has not competed since October 2025 due to chronic pain and complications resulting from a back problem. The decision to retire comes after a series of medical interventions failed to return him to the physical condition required for elite competition.
Medical Challenges and Forced Retirement
The road to retirement began with surgery in April 2025, followed by an extensive rehabilitation process. Despite these efforts, Axelsen suffered a significant setback in October 2025, which prevented him from training or playing at the necessary level.
In an effort to overcome the injury, Axelsen underwent endoscopic surgery, received multiple injections and implemented new training methods and treatments. However, these measures were unable to make him pain-free.
The final decision was reached following consultations with the surgeon who performed his operation in April 2025 and other medical professionals. Doctors warned Axelsen that continuing to compete could lead to the necessity of another surgery, and if that failed, a more serious procedure
might be required.
They say that with the pain I am experiencing now, it could potentially require another surgery, and if that does not go well, even a more serious procedure might be necessary. In any case, it would mean I would not be able to compete at the level required. So, It’s simply my body telling me to stop, and I have to follow the advice of my doctors.

- Secured three European championship titles.
Despite the abrupt end to his career caused by injury, Axelsen expressed joy when reflecting on his achievements and acknowledged the privilege of winning at the highest level of the sport.
