Florence’s Villa San Michele, A Belmond Hotel, is set to reopen on April 28, 2026, following an 18-month renovation, according to multiple reports. The historic property, originally a 15th-century Franciscan monastery, has undergone a meticulous transformation aimed at blending its Renaissance heritage with modern luxury.
The reopening marks a significant moment for the hotel, which boasts a 600-year history and is known for its stunning views of Florence. The renovation focused on restoring the existing structure while reimagining the interiors to emphasize Tuscan craftsmanship and a connection to nature.
Revamped Suites and a New Spa
The renovation has resulted in 39 completely redesigned suites and rooms, offering an elevated level of indulgence, and grandeur. Three new signature suites—The Grand Tour, Botanica, and Limonaia—have been introduced, each offering a unique experience. The Grand Tour, once occupied by Napoleon Bonaparte, spans the entire first floor and features neoclassical tapestries and panoramic city views. Botanica draws inspiration from the Villa’s historic gardens, while Limonaia offers secluded privacy with its own plunge pool and garden, as reported by Luxury Travel Report.
For the first time, Villa San Michele will feature a spa, the Villa San Michele Spa by Guerlain. The spa incorporates hand-painted murals by Elena Carozzi and natural stone finishes, aiming to evoke the tranquility of the monastery’s origins. Guerlain has also developed exclusive rituals inspired by the monks’ legacy and the Tuscan landscape.
Gardens and Immersive Experiences
The hotel’s terraced gardens, spanning over two acres of Renaissance flora, have also been revitalized by Luca Ghezzi Garden Design. Citrus trees, irises, and medicinal herbs—once prized by the Medici family—now enhance the gardens’ hidden nooks and viewpoints. This landscaping work echoes similar projects undertaken at Belmond’s Maroma and Splendido properties.

A partnership with Milan-based lifestyle brand La DoubleJ will introduce energy-focused experiences, including yoga, sound healing, and creative workshops led by founder JJ Martin. These offerings aim to provide guests with a holistic and immersive experience.
A Focus on Slow Luxury and Cultural Immersion
The renovation extends the hotel’s season, allowing it to remain open from spring through winter. This extended availability invites guests to embrace “slow luxury,” disconnecting from daily life and savoring time. According to Sofia Peluso, General Manager of Villa San Michele, the hotel aims to intertwine hospitality with cultural immersion.
“For us, hospitality is deeply intertwined with cultural immersion. Guests can embark on a journey that weaves together food, art, history, architecture and nature – a true fusion of body, mind and soul and a modern-day echo of the Renaissance principles that have so shaped our history.”
Sofia Peluso, General Manager
The property’s history began as a 600-year-old Franciscan monastery, and its façade was designed by the School of Michelangelo. The renovation reflects a commitment to preserving this heritage for future generations, as stated in a press release from Belmond. The reopening is anticipated to solidify Villa San Michele’s position as one of Italy’s premier luxury destinations.
Belmond announced the reopening on October 30, 2025, after the 18-month renovation. The hotel will welcome guests starting April 28, 2026, offering a renewed experience that honors its rich history and embraces modern luxury.
