Cork’s vibrant East Douglas Village is buzzing with anticipation as a beloved local establishment, The Village, prepares to reopen its doors following a notable refurbishment and a change in ownership. Acquired in 2021 by a Tipperary-based private investor for €11 million, the complex is now poised to welcome patrons once more, with a strong focus on its bar trade and a revitalised kitchen and restaurant offering.
A New Chapter for East Douglas Village
The East Douglas Village complex is nearing full occupancy, with recent lettings to Midleton-based Hs2 hair salon and Regina Nails on Patrick Street bolstering its commercial appeal. Margaret Kelleher of Cohalan Downing, who managed the sale of the development in five blocks in 2021 with a then rent roll of €760,000, highlighted the growing vibrancy of the area.
This All Ireland weekend, the spotlight will be firmly on The Village’s bar trade, with a planned midday Saturday opening. The culinary heart of the establishment will be under the expert guidance of well-known Cork chef Brendan Cashman, whose notable pedigree includes work at Augustines and the opening setup of Ox Kinsale.
Culinary Excellence and Local Roots
Gillian McCarthy, who brings a wealth of management and HR experience to the venture, shared her excitement. With family connections to the hotel trade, a sector she deeply understands, McCarthy is partnering with Kerry-based Patrick Dillon, who also boasts strong ties to the industry. “This has been a long time coming; it’s a dream,” McCarthy enthused, revealing that their new venture is expected to create up to 20 local jobs.
The previous operator’s tenure concluded in January, paving the way for The Village to undergo a comprehensive overhaul. Architects Healy Butler Moffatt were instrumental in the interior design, and the full impact of their work is expected to be even more apparent in the coming weeks as the finishing touches, including the symbolic red and white Cork flags, are put in place.
