Villanova’s football program will leave the Coastal Athletic association (CAA) to become part of the Patriot League in 2026,⁤ according to a joint announcement.The Villanova Wildcats are the third team⁢ to join the ⁢Patriot‌ League as ⁣football⁢ associate members ​as May 2024, after Richmond and William & Mary.

Patriot League Commissioner Jennifer Heppel⁣ hailed⁤ the addition of Villanova ‍as a important moment for the ‍conference. She noted Villanova’s consistent​ excellence and commitment to ‍academic achievement.The move, along‍ with⁣ Richmond and William & ‌Mary, strengthens the Patriot league’s​ position in FCS football.

Villanova will join Patriot League charter members Bucknell, Colgate, Holy Cross, ⁣Lafayette, and Lehigh, as well as associate ‍members Fordham, Georgetown, Richmond, ​and William & Mary.The ⁢expanded membership aims to bolster⁣ the league’s competitiveness and national presence⁤ in college football.

CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio‌ expressed disappointment at ⁢Villanova’s departure, acknowledging the changing landscape of college athletics. ⁤he affirmed⁣ the ⁤CAA’s commitment to ⁤high-level FCS competition.

With the expanded⁢ membership in 2026, eight ⁣of the ten ‌programs have been ranked in the Stats ⁤Perform and AFCA FCS ⁣Coaches Poll as 2015. These programs have collectively won 17 games in ​the FCS Playoffs, with eight quarterfinal‌ appearances, including‍ two each by Colgate,⁣ Richmond, and Villanova.
