Villaraigosa Accuses Harris, Becerra of Biden Cover-Up
Antonio Villaraigosa, former Los Angeles mayor and a potential 2026 California gubernatorial candidate, has accused former Vice President Kamala Harris and former Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra of complicity in concealing former President Joe Biden’s cognitive decline. Villaraigosa contends this alleged cover-up contributed to Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election.
Both Becerra and Harris, also Democrats, are considered potential contenders for California governor. The accusations inject a contentious element into the already developing race to succeed Gov. Gavin Newsom.
Villaraigosa’s statement referenced excerpts from the book “Original Sin: President Biden’s Decline,Its Cover-Up,and His Disastrous Choice to Run Again,” by Jake Tapper and Alex Thompson. The book alleges that Biden’s inner circle deliberately hid his declining health from the public.

“At the highest levels of our goverment, those in power were intentionally complicit or told outright lies in a systematic cover-up to keep Joe Biden’s mental decline from the public,” Villaraigosa stated. He questioned what Harris and Becerra knew and why they remained silent.
Dan schnur, a politics professor at USC, UC Berkeley, and Pepperdine, believes the issue poses a greater challenge for Harris than for Becerra. He argues that voters are more familiar with the role of vice president, making Harris’s potential knowlege of Biden’s health a more notable issue.
Harris previously defended Biden after a debate performance that raised concerns about his fitness for office. She described him as “remarkably strong.” In an august interview, she affirmed her support, calling him ”so smart and loyal to the American people.”
Becerra, responding to Villaraigosa’s attack, did not address the specific allegations but wished Biden well as he undergoes cancer treatment. He defended his work with Biden, stating that the former president made the mission clear: to expand healthcare access and lower prescription drug costs.
“Kamala Harris and Xavier Becerra took an oath of office and were entrusted to protect the American people, but instead Kamala Harris repeatedly said there was nothing wrong with Biden, and Becerra turned a blind eye,” villaraigosa said.
What’s next
The California governor’s race is expected to intensify as candidates seek to differentiate themselves. This attack on Harris and Becerra could be a sign of more aggressive campaigning to come, especially concerning the issue of Biden’s cognitive decline and the alleged cover-up.
