Viltrox has released its first autofocus lens for cameras utilizing the L-Mount system: the AF 16mm f/1.8. The arrival of this lens marks a significant step for Viltrox, which joined the L-Mount alliance in September 2025. Prior to this, Viltrox’s autofocus lenses were primarily available for Sony E-mount and Nikon Z-mount systems. This combination aims to minimize chromatic aberration and distortion, delivering sharp images across the frame. The lens utilizes a stepping motor (STM) for autofocus operation, promising smooth and quiet performance, particularly beneficial for video recording.

Beyond its optical characteristics, the lens incorporates several features geared towards user convenience. It boasts a weather-sealed construction, intended to protect against dust, and moisture. The Panasonic 18mm f/1.8 offers a closer minimum focusing distance, while the Sigma 20mm f/2 is more compact.

Future L-Mount Developments from Viltrox

Viltrox has indicated that the AF 28mm f/4.5 pancake lens will be its next L-mount release. Beyond that, the company’s roadmap remains unclear. The Viltrox Air line of compact prime lenses (20mm f/2.8, 40mm f/2.5, and 50mm f/2.0) would be a welcome addition to the L-Mount system, particularly given the limited selection of compact autofocus primes currently available. The AF 35mm f/1.2 and AF 135mm f/1.8 lenses from Viltrox’s LAB series are also highly anticipated by L-Mount users.

The speed with which Viltrox expands its L-Mount lineup will be a key factor in its success within the alliance. The company’s commitment to the platform will be closely watched, especially in comparison to other third-party lens manufacturers who have been slower to adopt the L-Mount standard.
