MVP Reveals Last-Minute Vince McMahon Change in Cody Rhodes NXT Match
Updated May 31, 2025
AEW star MVP recently shared a story about the pressures of live television under Vince McMahon, specifically regarding an NXT match against Cody Rhodes. The AEW wrestler described how the match’s planned ending was changed moments before going off the air, a move that greatly amused McMahon.
On the ”Marking Out with MVP and Dwayne Swayze” podcast, MVP detailed an episode of the original live NXT series. He was scheduled to defeat Cody Rhodes, but the match duration had been altered several times that day. Just before MVP’s entrance, the match was extended from 12-15 minutes to roughly 24 minutes. Rhodes was unaware of this change.
MVP communicated the new timings to rhodes through the referee. As the match progressed, with MVP set to win, McMahon intervened.”MVP is supposed to beat Cody… I grabbed Cody, I put my leg over the back of his neck… the referee says, ‘Vince says Cody’s up. Vince says Cody’s up,'” MVP recalled. “Oh no, we’re seconds to going off the air live.”
With no time to plan, MVP improvised. “Cody’s underneath my leg… This match is over, and from underneath my leg. I [hear] ‘What the [fuck]?’ And I just said ‘Cody reverses, Crossroads’… He knew how to go, Okay, do the reversal, and so he did.Came through the reversal boom, hit the Crossroads. 1-2-3, Cody wins.” The wrestling match had an unexpected ending.
McMahon’s reaction backstage was memorable. ”Vince takes off the headset and he’s laughing… He thought it was hysterical,” MVP said. However, MVP added that a mistake would not have been met with laughter. Despite being “pissed off” and exchanging words with McMahon, MVP uses this story to illustrate the need for wrestlers to adapt on live TV, showcasing the WWE environment.
“Cody’s out there mentally prepared for the 10-12, whatever we had. He has no idea,” MVP said, describing the moments before the match.
