Jonas Vingegaard experienced a shocking setback in Stage 5’s individual time trial, losing meaningful time to rivals including Tadej Pogačar and unexpectedly slipping down⁣ the general classification. While the Jumbo-Visma leader remained tight-lipped about the exact cause of his struggles,⁢ he⁤ assured reporters he felt better than ‌he did at the Critérium du Dauphiné and remains optimistic about his chances in the Tour de France.

Time Trial Disappointment and ⁤team Secrecy

Vingegaard finished well off the pace in the 22.4km time trial, conceding over a minute to Pogačar and other key contenders.‌ The magnitude of the loss ⁤raised immediate ⁢questions ⁣about his condition and planning. However, both Vingegaard and his directeur sportif, Arthur van ⁣Dongen, were reluctant to divulge specifics.

“Yesterday was a tough‍ day for me. I was definitely disappointed, as I should be,” Vingegaard admitted after Stage 6. Van Dongen added, “It⁤ was something specific⁢ to the time trial but we’re going to keep the facts internally in the team.”

this veil of secrecy has fueled speculation, but Vingegaard was quick to dismiss suggestions that an aggressive opening week of racing was to blame. “I don’t think that’s the reason. Then⁣ I would have also been suffering today,” he stated, emphasizing the⁣ need for a thorough analysis of what went wrong.

Assessing the Route and Current Form

Vingegaard expressed surprise at the difficulty of the tour’s opening stages. “When I saw the Tour ‍route I ‍thought it’d be an easy first week⁣ but to be honest, it hasn’t been. Hopefully,‍ the race will build up more and more and hopefully, this Tour de France will be a very hard one.” ‍He acknowledged the first week had been “quite a tough” challenge.

Despite the time trial setback, Vingegaard is confident his current form surpasses that of the Critérium⁤ du Dauphiné, where Pogačar demonstrably outperformed him. “I definitely got better than at the Dauphine. I’m definitely ‍sure about⁢ that,” he‌ asserted.

Though, he remained realistic, acknowledging the uncertainty of the race. “Is it enough? We’ll see by the end⁣ of the Tour.”

Looking Ahead: Optimism Despite the Setback

Vingegaard’s post-time trial comments focused on resilience and a forward-looking viewpoint. He highlighted a good night’s sleep⁣ and a ⁣renewed focus on the stages ahead.

“But I had a good night of sleep and today is a new day. The Tour is long, so we’re still optimistic.⁢ I’m happy with how I was feeling today. Now we focus on tomorrow.”

The Tour de‍ France ‌remains a grueling test of endurance, strategy, and mental fortitude. While the time trial presented a significant hurdle, Vingegaard’s determination and belief in his ⁤improved condition suggest ⁤he is far from out of contention. The coming mountain stages will be crucial⁢ in determining his fate and whether he can‍ challenge Pogačar⁢ for the yellow jersey. The ⁣Tour de France is the biggest race in cycling, and a Cyclingnews subscription offers you unlimited access to our unrivalled coverage.
