Vinícius Jr. Scores Winner as Real Madrid Advances in Champions League

Vinícius Jr. Scores Winner as Real Madrid Advances in Champions League

February 26, 2026 David Thompson - Sports Editor Sports

MADRID — The atmosphere at the Santiago Bernabéu on Wednesday night was charged with more than just Champions League ambition. It was a night framed by allegations of racism and the return of a familiar face on the opposing bench, yet ultimately defined by the resurgent form of Vinícius Júnior.

With Gianluca Prestianni suspended pending UEFA’s investigation into accusations of racial abuse leveled against him by Vinícius in the first leg, and Benfica manager José Mourinho absent due to a touchline ban, the spotlight shone squarely on the Brazilian forward. He responded decisively, scoring the 80th-minute winner that secured Real Madrid’s place in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 with a 3-1 aggregate victory.

The match itself was a far cry from the dominant performance Madrid displayed in Lisbon a week prior. They were, by their own admission, less convincing, raising questions about their ability to mount a serious challenge deep into the competition. However, Vinícius’s quality was undeniable. He followed up his crucial goal in the first leg – a goal he claims was preceded by racist abuse – with another vital strike on Wednesday night, albeit one less spectacular in its execution.

Played through by Federico Valverde, Vinícius confidently drove at the Benfica defense, outpacing his markers before calmly slotting the ball past goalkeeper Anatoliy Trubin. The celebration that followed – a pointed recreation of a gesture Mourinho had criticized in Lisbon – was imbued with a clear message.

Vinícius is currently enjoying his best run of form this season, scoring in each of his last five appearances for Real Madrid – a career-best streak. Since Álvaro Arbeloa took the reins, Vinícius has rediscovered his touch, scoring as many goals in 10 games under the new coach as he did in 33 matches during Xabi Alonso’s tenure, a period ultimately marred by a fractured relationship with the Brazilian.

This resurgence is timely for Madrid, particularly with Kylian Mbappé sidelined with a knee injury – an absence Arbeloa described as “not a question of days” – and Jude Bellingham not expected back until April. The team is increasingly reliant on Vinícius to provide the spark that was once shared by the absent stars.

Before kickoff, the home fans displayed a banner proclaiming “No to racism” in support of Vinícius, a gesture met with jeers from the traveling Benfica supporters every time he touched the ball.

Benfica proved to be a challenging opponent, creating nine chances and registering 12 shots with an expected goals (xG) value of 1.98, exceeding Madrid’s 1.11. Thibaut Courtois was forced to make four crucial saves, including a remarkable stop to deny Richard Ríos in the first half.

Despite being third in the Portuguese league, Benfica pushed Madrid to the limit over both legs, having lost six European matches this season to teams including Qarabag, Chelsea, Newcastle United, Bayer Leverkusen, Juventus, and Real Madrid.

Arbeloa acknowledged Vinícius’s importance after the match, stating, “He had a great game. He threatened, he scored, he was dangerous… We need him, even with Kylian, but without Kylian, we need him even more. He has to be our leader.”

Madrid will discover their round of 16 opponents on Friday, with either Manchester City or Sporting CP awaiting them. A clash with Manchester City, a frequent opponent in recent years, would represent a significant test.

“Whoever comes, it will be difficult,” Arbeloa conceded. But the team’s current form suggests that overcoming such a challenge will require more than just individual brilliance; it will demand a collective improvement.
