An infant in Shropshire contracted respiratory syncytial virus at three weeks of age and spent three months hospitalized, prompting a public warning from the child’s mother against kissing newborns, kormedi.com reported. Tillyrose Mercer of Shrewsbury called for an ambulance in December 2025 after her son, Vinnie Mercer Grant, struggled to breathe and failed to feed properly just one week and two days after returning home from the hospital.

Severe Complications From Early Viral Infection

Born slightly early, Vinnie was very small when he fell ill at three weeks old and tested positive for both RSV and enterovirus. The infection developed into a chest infection and pneumonia, followed by a collapsed lung known as atelectasis, and viral meningitis affecting the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord. On December 31, 2025, the infant experienced a 16-second apnea episode followed by rapid breathing. Medical staff warned that if his condition did not improve within 30 minutes, intubation and life support would be required. Because his condition did not stabilize, clinicians performed intubation before the 30-minute window closed and induced a medical coma for treatment. Published images showed Vinnie tethered to medical lines and wearing an oxygen mask. He remained hospitalized for three months before leaving the hospital on March 27, 2026. Mercer stated that she was preparing for the worst outcome during that period, feeling powerless while waiting to see what would happen.

Public Warning Issued Ahead of Viral Season

Mercer stated that she remains uncertain how Vinnie contracted RSV, noting that the infection occurred while they stayed at home around the Christmas period. Nine months after the ordeal, with the RSV season approaching, she shared photographs of her son alongside a plea for people to avoid kissing infants. RSV spreads easily through actions like kissing. Mercer said she knows that family members want to visit and hold a baby when they are born, and asked that those who have been recently ill or are not feeling well take extra care. RSV typically causes cold-like symptoms such as a runny nose and cough, and most children contract it at least once before turning two. The virus spreads through droplets from coughs and sneezes, direct contact like kissing, or touching contaminated surfaces before contacting the face. Symptoms usually appear four to six days after exposure and resolve within one to two weeks, but high-risk groups including infants under six months old, premature babies, and those with congenital heart or chronic lung conditions face a higher risk of severe illness.

RSV Inpatient Cases Decline in South Korea

In South Korea, RSV circulates primarily between October and March. According to the Korea Disease Control and Prevention Agency’s 2026 respiratory infection control guidelines, sentinel surveillance medical institutions reported 11,381 RSV inpatient cases in 2023, 8,976 cases in 2024, and 7,417 cases in 2025. Infectious individuals can spread the virus one to two days before symptoms appear, while some infants and immunocompromised patients shed the virus for over four weeks. Official guidance recommends washing hands with soap for at least 30 seconds before touching an infant, disinfecting frequently handled objects, and avoiding kissing or close contact with babies if cold symptoms are present. Treatment centers on supportive care, including hydration and breathing assistance.
