France is facing widespread high school blockades and student protests over educational reforms on Oct. 1, 2026, leading to severe disruptions, violent clashes with police, and arson attacks across multiple cities including Nantes, Paris, Marseille, and Strasbourg. Police data cited by Agence France-Presse show 340 active actions and 169 total blockades nationwide, while the Île-de-France regional authority reports more than 200 disturbed high schools in the Paris region alone.

Arson Destroys High School Hall in Nantes

The most severe structural damage occurred at the public polyvalent high school Nelson-Mandela on the Île de Nantes, where a fire completely gutted the central entrance hall on the morning of Oct. 1, 2026. More than 1,700 students attend the Nantes facility, which was evacuated alongside staff members after violent clashes broke out near personnel. The Loire-Atlantique prefecture reported that violent individuals unconnected to the student body joined the demonstrations to commit vandalism, targeting nine separate facilities in Nantes and triggering fires at three of them. Police made 18 arrests across the department in response to the unrest, letelegramme.fr reported.

Student Protests Disrupt Public Transit in French Cities

Demonstrations heavily impacted urban mobility in several major French cities as students overturned bins, lit street fires, and threw projectiles. In Toulouse, groups of young protesters occupied roadways and tramway tracks, bringing public transit to a complete standstill, while Strasbourg authorities temporarily suspended tram circulation to restrict demonstrator movement.

In Marseille, the rectorat confirmed that the deputy principal and two other staff members at Victor Hugo High School were splashed with gasoline by individuals filling containers near the gates. In Rennes, a large crowd gathered outside the entrance of Bréquigny High School, the largest facility in Brittany, to enforce a morning blockade.

Student Unions Expand Nationwide Mobilization

The unrest follows an initial national mobilization on Sept. 29, 2026, marking what organizers termed act two of the student movement. The Union étudiante student union reported that approximately 30 university campuses were blocked by Thursday morning. Middle schools also joined the decentralized protests, with the prefecture in the Rhône department recording five blocked institutions among 36 total affected sites.

Government Launches Dialogue Platform to Ease Tensions

To address the escalating protests, officials have moved to open formal channels for communication with student representatives. Edouard Geffray announced the establishment of a dedicated consultation platform open to all high school students seeking to voice their grievances, according to letelegramme.fr reporting.

Après un rassemblement émaillé de violences envers les employés, le portail du lycée Mandela a pris feu, entraînant l’évacuation des équipes et des élèves, l’intervention sur place des forces de l’ordre et des pompiers, et l’extinction finale de l’incendie.
