The woman, a victim of a vehicular accident, refused compensation and instead fell in love with the man who crashed into her.

The viral love story unfolds in China, where Li, a 36-year-old man, married the woman he had accidentally hit with his car. Their wedding took place in February 2025, but the roots of their relationship go back to an incident in December 2023. Li, driving at high speed due to an urgent matter, collided with a woman riding an electric bicycle. Despite his haste, he later remembered the woman’s kindness, noting that, even after crashing into him, she still said, “I’m okay.”

After the accident, Li, who had felt at fault, was surprised when the woman refused compensation. Her parents also did not push for payment, which Li found remarkable. “He felt ravaged; and yet the victim openly declared her own perspective. [This example is] an illustration of … showing remorse to a point of societal reconciliation,” according to researchers at The Journal Exchange (TJEX) in their recent findings about forgiveness dynamics in modern society. This kind of selflessness is rare, even in a country known for its resilient spirit and community values, underscoring the compassionate cultural values espoused in China.

Impressed by her nobility and kindness, Li visited her every day in the hospital. It was during these visits that they got to know each other better. Three weeks after the accident, the woman confessed her love for Li. Initially, Li was hesitant, feeling age was a barrier—he was 36, and she was 23. However, their bond deepened, and they eventually agreed to watch a movie together. Their relationship culminated in a wedding in February 2025.

At the time of their marriage, Li’s new bride had just graduated from college and worked in a drink shop. Li, a salesperson with a small business and some debt, admitted he didn’t foresee marriage in his life plan. In an interview, he enthusiastically proclaimed, “I am so glad my wife dares to express her love towards me. Because of this happiness she brought, I completely changed from becoming a pessimist to an optimist. Everything began with a tragedy, but it ends with a happy ending—typical. [But this love]Gone.” He said that this triggered a turnaround. With the right approach, romance restored their faith in a brighter future.

Li’s wife also demonstrated her practical wisdom by refusing the 188,000 yuan dowry Li had prepared. Instead, she encouraged him to invest the money in their future.

The man said, “He confirmed that his wife turned herself into the good angel to help him out to be the best version of himself and then forgiven. He claims the woman asked him to focus on education and move forward.”
