A Life Well-Lived: Virginia Marshall, 103, Passes Away
Georgetown, TX – Virginia Ruth nose Marshall, a remarkable woman who witnessed a century of American history, passed away peacefully in her Georgetown home on October 13, 2024, at the age of 103. Born in Fairmont, West Virginia, on May 30, 1921, Virginia lived a life filled with adventure, service, and a deep love for family and nature.
Virginia’s life spanned an era of incredible change. From the introduction of indoor plumbing and automobiles to the rise of the internet and mobile phones, she embraced each technological advancement with curiosity and grace.
A trailblazer for women, Virginia enlisted in the U.S. Navy during World War II, joining the newly formed Waves. Her service included training at Cedar Falls, Iowa, and Milledgeville, Georgia, before being stationed at the Bureau of Naval Personnel in washington, D.C.
After the war, Virginia returned to West Virginia before moving to Corpus Christi, Texas, where she met her future husband, Clyde Leslie (Les) Marshall, a World War II Air Corps veteran. Their love story included a daring honeymoon flight in Les’s Culver Cadet airplane to Niagara Falls, a testament to their adventurous spirits.
Virginia’s passion for roses blossomed in 1948,leading her to become a Consulting Rosarian,Accredited Rose Judge,and Life Consulting Rosarian. She dedicated decades to cultivating her beloved English Rose Gardens, competing in rose shows, and sharing her knowledge with fellow enthusiasts.
Beyond roses, Virginia’s interests were diverse. She was an active member of Presbyterian churches throughout her life, serving as a Deacon and finding solace in her faith. Genealogy became another passion, leading her and Les on countless journeys to uncover their family history.
Virginia is survived by her son,Marc,and his wife,Sheri,of Georgetown; granddaughter Jillian Szalay (and husband David) of Georgetown; and three great-grandchildren,Emmet,Wyatt,and weston Szalay. She is also survived by sisters Laura Jean Swindell of Suffolk, Virginia, and Charles Nose of Patterson, Georgia, along with numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.
Virginia was preceded in death by her husband, Les; her parents, William and Esta Nose; sisters Florence Fife and Helen Wood; and brother William F. (Bud) Nose.
An informal remembrance open house will be held on December 14, 2024, from 10 a.m. to noon at her home in georgetown’s Cross Country Estates. family graveside services will be held at Concord Cemetery near zavalla,Texas,where Virginia will be laid to rest beside her husband.
