According to CBS News and the Associated Press, five people sustained injuries during a shooting involving multiple suspects at Virginia State University early Saturday morning, prompting a temporary lockdown across the campus.
The violence occurred at approximately 1:30 a.m. near a university residence hall and the Quad Annexes on the Chesterfield County campus, according to statements from campus police and the Chesterfield County Police Department reported by WTVR. Responding law enforcement officers discovered five individuals suffering from gunshot wounds at the scene.
Medical personnel transported all five victims to nearby hospitals for treatment, as reported by the university. Campus officials stated that one of the victims is currently in critical condition, while the remaining four individuals sustained injuries that are not considered life-threatening.
Campus Lockdown and Ongoing Investigation
Following the initial gunfire, the university instituted a temporary campus lockdown as law enforcement secured the area. University authorities advised the campus community via social media to continue avoiding the affected zone and to follow all instructions issued by police.
A significant law enforcement presence remains established on the grounds while the investigation continues, according to school officials. Local and federal agencies, including the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Hanover County Sheriff’s Office, are assisting the university and Chesterfield County police with the inquiry. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether any suspects have been arrested in connection with the shooting.
