Chianni, Italy – A new foundation, La Grillaia, has been established to support social and community initiatives in the Tuscan municipality of Chianni. The foundation, formalized on June 17, 2025, is a joint effort between the Comune di Chianni (Municipality of Chianni), Nuova Servizi Ambiente (New Environmental Services), and Gruppo Vergero.
The initiative aims to bolster local development and enhance the quality of life for residents through projects focused on social, cultural, artistic, and sporting activities, according to a report in Il Tirreno. The foundation will initially contribute €500,000 to local projects in 2025, with €400,000 allocated to the Comune di Chianni.
This funding includes the €4 per ton of waste processed at the “Grillaia” landfill, as stipulated by environmental authorization, doubled voluntarily to reach the total amount. An additional €100,000 will be dedicated to supporting local initiatives through a network of community associations.
Foundation Leadership
The foundation’s leadership consists of Virginia Vergero, President of the Foundation and representing Gruppo Vergero; Mario Giusti, a Foundation Counselor and President of Nuova Servizi Ambiente; and Giacomo Tarrini, the Mayor of Chianni, also serving as a Foundation Counselor.
Addressing Past Challenges
The creation of the foundation comes after a period of difficulty in reaching agreements regarding the waste treatment and disposal facility, known as the “Grillaia” plant, with the local community. The initiative seeks to re-engage the community in new development projects.

Current and Planned Projects
The foundation has already begun supporting local initiatives, including funding to keep the local kindergarten open and organizing a “Candlelight” piano and music event scheduled for July 18th. Further projects are in the planning stages, focusing on supporting local sports and social services.
According to a LinkedIn post from Gruppo Vergero, the foundation’s creation represents a commitment to supporting the social fabric and improving the quality of life in Chianni. The foundation aims to involve local associations and organizations in the management process, allowing them to suggest projects for funding.
Renewable Energy Initiatives in Italy
The establishment of La Grillaia Foundation aligns with a broader trend in Italy towards community-led renewable energy initiatives. As of March 2023, there were at least 35 renewable energy communities across Italy, according to Legambiente Campania. These communities, such as the one in San Giovanni a Teduccio, Naples, are working to provide low-cost, clean energy to local residents and combat energy poverty.
The San Giovanni project, launched in 2021, utilizes 166 solar panels to provide energy to 20 low-income families. These initiatives are part of a national effort to encourage joint generation and distribution of energy from renewable sources.
Fondazione La Grillaia’s focus on community support and local development reflects a growing emphasis on sustainable and equitable solutions to address social and environmental challenges in Italy.
