Virtual Desktop has launched a new update that includes several notable features.
Desk Passthrough
This feature is now available for Meta Quest headsets. Users can create a flat rectangular area in which they can see their real environment instead of virtual reality. The Desk Passthrough enhances the existing Passthrough Keyboard feature, previously limited to tracked keyboards. Now, users can view any keyboard, mouse, and other accessories like HOTAS gear for simulation games.
Reduced Latency
The update reduces decoding latency for PC VR streaming at high bitrates. This improvement applies to headsets with the Snapdragon XR2 Gen 2 chipset, such as Quest 3, Quest 3S, and Pico 4 Ultra. Users can expect about a 30% reduction in total latency when using maximum bitrates of 200 Mbps for HEVC and AV1, and more than 400 Mbps for H264. According to developer Guy Godin, this change can save users approximately 5-6 milliseconds of decoding latency.
New Virtual Environment: First Class
The update introduces the First Class virtual environment. This setting provides a high-quality scene where users can utilize their PC monitors.
Virtual Desktop continues to set itself apart from competitors like Meta, Pico, and Valve. While those companies offer some functions for free, Guy Godin’s $20 app remains a preferred choice for many headset users due to its innovative features and enhancements.
