The Chicago Park District reported on April 10, 2026, that the blossoms had reached Stage 4-5 of their development. According to the district’s bud development legend, Stage 4 occurs when buds open and flowers become visible, while Stage 5 is characterized by many flowers opening.
The park district advised visitors to visit within a few days of the April 10 update for peak enjoyment. To avoid large crowds, the agency recommends visiting the Cherry Blossom Grove during weekday mornings and early afternoons.
Bloom Status and Development
The 2026 bloom is expected to be robust due to ample rainfall and relatively minor fluctuations in spring temperatures. The blooming process in Jackson Park occurs sequentially by species, resulting in a staggered display of pink and white petals that can last for over two weeks.
Earlier updates from April 6, 2026, indicated that the trees were in varied stages. At that time, the oldest mother tree
and trees on the south end were at Stage 4-5, while pink trees were approaching Stage 5. Many of the white flower trees, specifically the snow goose variety, were still at Stage 3, where buds open and petals begin to be visible.
Location and Visiting Information
The cherry blossoms are located along the Columbia Basin in Jackson Park, near 6401 S. Stony Island Ave. And the east side of Cornell Ave., just south of the Griffin Museum of Science and Industry.

The grove consists of more than 200 trees. These are situated on either side of the South Portico and surrounding the Columbia Basin pond. Additional trees can be found in the Osaka Garden and on the north end of the Wooded Island, both of which are within walking distance south of the Columbia Basin.
Visitors may utilize paid metered parking, though some reports indicate free parking is available on Cottage Grove.
History of the Grove
The cherry trees have been a feature of Jackson Park for over a decade. The initial planting began in 2013 with 120 trees, followed by another 50 trees in 2014. The collection was expanded further with 34 trees added in 2022, and 20 more planted across 2024 and 2025.
The tradition of viewing these blossoms is associated with the Japanese practice of Hanami
, which translates to flower viewing
. This seasonal celebration involves families gathering to enjoy the company of the blossoms.
While peak bloom typically occurs between late April and early May and lasts between 6 and 14 days depending on the weather, the 2026 season saw an earlier progression toward full blossoms in mid-April.
