Updated May 25, 2025
Wout van Aert refuted suggestions that Visma-Lease a Bike took advantage of a massive crash at Saturday’s Giro d’Italia stage. Van Aert said the team was focused on securing a stage win for Olav Kooij, who finished third. The Giro d’Italia stage saw Simon Yates jump to second in the general classification (GC) after the incident.
According to Van Aert, Visma-Lease a Bike was actively chasing the breakaway to position Kooij for a sprint victory. He emphasized the team’s commitment to winning the stage and denied any intention to capitalize unfairly on the misfortune of othre riders. Kasper Asgreen of EF Education-EasyPost won the stage.
The crash, occurring with just over 20 kilometers remaining, caused significant splits in the peloton and created time gaps among the GC contenders. Race leader Isaac del Toro managed a solo effort to rejoin the front group, preserving his lead. Several riders, including Primož Roglič and Juan Ayuso, lost valuable time. Giulio Ciccone, who started the day in seventh place, was forced to abandon the race due to injuries sustained in the crash.
“This is not the way I want to take time. We took control of the course and wanted to sprint for victory,” Wout van Aert, Visma-Lease a Bike said.
