Pogačar and Visma Clash Over Tactics as Tour de France Heats Up
The Tour de France is no stranger to drama, and the latest chapter involves a public spat between cycling superstar tadej Pogačar and the formidable Visma-lease a Bike team over their controversial race tactics. Pogačar, the overwhelming favorite for the yellow jersey, didn’t hold back his criticism, reportedly labelling Visma’s strategy as “Rubbish” on Slovenian radio.”Visma tried to do, I don’t know what… They went hard, so we just followed them,” Pogačar explained, referencing their aggressive approach on the final two climbs of a recent stage. He speculated on their motives, suggesting they might have had intelligence about Mathieu van der Poel (Alpecin-Deceuninck) struggling,or perhaps even aiming to gift him the yellow jersey. “Maybe they had info that Mathieu van der Poel was suffering and losing time up front. Perhaps visma wanted to give me the yellow jersey today. But Mathieu has it by one second, so chapeau to him.”
Visma Strike Back at Pogačar’s Criticism
Visma-Lease a Bike, however, were speedy to defend their actions and dismiss Pogačar’s assessment.Race director Grischa Niermann told Sporza on Friday, ”What was the plan? Its a good thing he [Pogačar] doesn’t get it.” He firmly stated,”We’re following our own tactics and did exactly what we wanted. Period.”
This exchange highlights the intense strategic battles unfolding within the peloton. Visma-Lease a Bike has garnered notable praise in the early stages of the Tour for their masterful use of crosswinds, which allowed them to gain valuable time on rivals like Remco Evenepoel (Soudal-QuickStep) and Primož Roglič (Red Bull-Bora-Hansgrohe). Their aggressive tactics on stage 2, which saw them tear the peloton apart in the coastal town of Boulogne-sur-Mer, were notably lauded.
However, their approach in western France later in the week has sparked more debate, with the effectiveness and intent of their moves being openly questioned. Despite the controversy, Wout van Aert, a key rider for Visma, was back on the attack from the start of stage 7, signalling that the team remains committed to their aggressive racing style.
The Tour de France continues to be a captivating spectacle, not just for the incredible athleticism on display, but also for the intricate tactical chess matches played out between the world’s best cyclists and their teams. The differing philosophies and public disagreements between riders like Pogačar and teams like Visma-Lease a bike only add to the excitement and narrative of this iconic Grand Tour.
