Kira Chathli hit the winning runs as Warwickshire secured a nail-biting victory over Surrey, chasing down their target with two balls and 20 balls to spare.
Warwickshire’s Resilience Shines Through
Warwickshire posted a competitive 153 for nine after being put in to bat by Surrey. Despite an early wobble, losing Meg austin to Alexa Stonehouse on the second ball and Davina Perrin for a duck in the following over, the Bears fought back. Issy Wong, who had impressed in the semi-final, top-scored with a rapid 31 off just 19 deliveries before being dismissed by Stonehouse for her second wicket.
Further setbacks saw Sterre Kalis run out for 10, and Phoebe Franklin claimed the wickets of Amu Surenkumar and Natasha Wraight (23), leaving Warwickshire in a precarious position at 83 for six. Franklin continued her impressive spell, bowling Em Arlott for three. Laura Harris provided a late surge with a blistering 25 from 11 balls, but fell to Danielle gregory, reducing Warwickshire to 115 for eight in the 15th over. Skipper Georgia Davis was run out for seven, but Millie Taylor and Hannah baker managed to add crucial runs in the closing stages to set Surrey a challenging target.
Surrey’s Chase Stumbles Despite Strong Start
Surrey’s chase began with an early breakthrough as Danni Wyatt-Hodge was caught by Hannah baker off Arlott in the second over. Skipper Bryony Smith scored 21 before being caught by Austin off Surenkumar. Wicketkeeper Nat Wraith was instrumental, stumping Alice Capsey to leave Surrey at 42 for three.
Wraith struck again, dismissing Sophie Dunkley for 23, as Surrey reached 79 for four at the halfway point. However, Laura Harris began to find her rhythm, with her powerful hitting putting Warwickshire on the back foot. Paige scholfield made 7 off as many balls before being caught by Perrin off arlott, but by then Surrey had reached 123, and the momentum seemed to be shifting firmly in their favour.
Chathli’s Heroics Clinch the Win
Despite the pressure, Warwickshire’s bowlers and fielders dug deep. The crucial breakthrough came when Chathli, alongside Grace Harris, guided Warwickshire to a memorable victory, with Chathli hitting the winning runs off issy Wong. The image of Chathli and teammate Grace Harris celebrating their hard-fought victory captures the spirit of their determined performance.
