Addressing the Missing 20 Minutes Theory
Weighing in on the claims, Vivian Kubrick wrote in her statement published on X, You know, this is as good a time as any to finally address the missing 20 minutes from Eyes Wide Shut. It’s a story that has been circulating for many years, so let me tell you what I actually know and don’t know.
She added that she never heard anything about a missing 20 minutes at the time of production, nor has she seen any subsequent evidence to confirm such a section ever existed.

Editing Processes and Archival Reality
Explaining the technical realities of post-production in 1999, Vivian Kubrick noted that Eyes Wide Shut was edited on an Avid digital system, but physical film distribution relied heavily on cutting the original camera negative to match the final edit. She explained that once the negative was physically cut to match the Avid edit, each cut destroyed frames at both ends of a shot, making it impossible to simply undo cuts and rearrange the film.

Furthermore, Vivian Kubrick stated that Stanley Kubrick routinely had his outtakes incinerated once a film was finished to prevent studios from later re-editing his work or creating alternative versions. She added that she knows of no surviving cache of Avid rushes from the film, though she suggested that the official archive of her father’s papers held at the University of the Arts London contains his production records.
Studio Alterations and Final Verdict
According to the sources, the only alteration Vivian Kubrick recalled hearing about during post-production was the use of computer-generated imagery to obscure nudity in the film’s elaborate orgy sequence. Warner Bros. requested the digital modification to secure an R rating for the theatrical release.

Concluding her remarks, Vivian Kubrick dismissed the broader narrative as an invention rather than established fact. Unless substantive evidence emerges—and I do not regard stories from certain people who, in my opinion, are inventing them after the fact as evidence; people often want to sensationalize their part in a story, if indeed they even had a part—the story that 20 minutes were removed from Eyes Wide Shut after his death remains, to my mind, an actual conspiracy theory, not an established fact,
