Philadelphia Rookie V.J. Edgecombe Shines at NBA All-Star Weekend’s Rising Stars Game

INGLEWOOD, Calif. – The NBA All-Star Weekend in Los Angeles got underway Friday night with the Rising Stars tournament, and Philadelphia 76ers rookie V.J. Edgecombe quickly became the story of the night. Despite the absence of highly anticipated rookie Cooper Flagg, Edgecombe seized the spotlight, earning MVP honors and leading Team Vince to victory in the four-team competition.

Edgecombe’s performance wasn’t just about securing the win; it was about a noticeable competitive spirit in an event often criticized for its lack of intensity. According to reports, Edgecombe took inspiration from a talk delivered the night before by Naismith Hall of Famer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, who spoke to the players about leveraging their platform and building their brands.

The 76ers rookie demonstrated his clutch ability throughout the tournament. He began the night with a strong showing in the semifinal game, scoring 17 points to help Team Vince defeat the team selected by Tracy McGrady. But it was his performance in the championship game against Team Melo that truly cemented his MVP status. With the game tied and the target score within reach, Edgecombe calmly sank two free throws to secure a 25-24 victory for Team Vince.

“There were all eyes on this game,” Edgecombe said after the championship win. “We know how special it is to play in a city like Los Angeles, so I wanted to give it my all. I’m happy people were entertained, and we tried to make the match as competitive as possible.”

The Rising Stars event, revamped this year with a four-team tournament format, still faces questions about its overall appeal. However, Edgecombe’s performance injected a much-needed dose of excitement into the proceedings. He wasn’t the only player to impress; Matas Buzelis showcased impressive footwork and moves, and the opening game saw a dramatic game-winner from Dylan Harper over his brother, Ron Harper Jr.

The tournament also provided a platform for G-League players to shine, with Yanic Konan Niederhäuser of the Clippers leading Team Austin with 11 points. Niederhäuser praised the energy of the crowd and the atmosphere at the Intuit Dome, calling it an amazing experience.

Edgecombe’s performance comes as no surprise to those who have followed his progress with the 76ers. He has consistently demonstrated a knack for hitting clutch shots and a relentless competitive drive. According to PhillyVoice, Edgecombe and his teammates were already discussing potential Rising Stars contenders earlier this season, highlighting his anticipation for the event.

“I don’t have anything to prove, but I enjoy playing basketball, so I’m happy when I can do it in a setting like this,” Edgecombe added, downplaying any pressure he might have felt in the moment. His focus, he said, was simply on being “dogged and focused” at the free-throw line.

The victory for Team Vince, spearheaded by Edgecombe’s stellar play, sets a positive tone for the remainder of the NBA All-Star Weekend. While the Rising Stars game may still be evolving, Edgecombe’s performance provided a compelling reminder of the talent and potential within the league’s rising generation.
