According to Antara News Agency on the 28th local time, the Indonesian Volcanology and Geological Disaster Prevention Center announced that Mount Marapi erupted four times in the morning and afternoon the previous day.
In particular, at 9:56 a.m. the previous day, the volcano erupted and volcanic ash rose 2km high from the summit.
As the eruption continued, villages near Marapi Volcano were covered with volcanic debris, and hikers and villagers were prohibited from entering within 3km of the crater.
The Prevention Center explained that volcanic activity has been rapidly increasing, with earthquakes continuously being detected at Marapi Volcano since the 7th.
Indonesia, located in the Pacific Rim orogenic belt known as the ‘Ring of Fire’, has about 120 active volcanoes.
Marapi Volcano, which erupted this time, also suddenly erupted in December last year, killing 24 hikers and injuring several others.
