Volkswagen CEO Oliver Blume described the automaker’s financial standing as “more than critical” in an internal intranet interview reviewed by the dpa news agency, warning that urgent action is required to secure the company’s future.

Escalating Financial Pressures and High Fixed Costs

According to Investing.com France, Volkswagen’s fixed costs exceed those of its rivals by more than 30%. Compounding these financial burdens are persistent software problems, rising costs, and a decline in profitability. Oliver Blume has spent recent months attempting to make the manufacturer faster and more efficient—the group encompasses brands such as Audi, Porsche, and Skoda—as reported by Le Soir.

Labor Confrontation and Stalled Restructuring Plans

Management’s maneuverability remains tightly constrained by the company’s supervisory board, where German labor unions are very influential. According to La Libre.be, the supervisory board rejected projects to close four German factories and eliminate nearly 100,000 positions. M. Blume indicated last month that approximately 50,000 jobs could be deleted to make VW competitive again, according to coverage by La Libre.be and Le Soir.

Upcoming Personnel Meetings Across German Plants

The CEO’s stark assessment was published internally just as leadership prepares for a demanding stretch of direct engagement with the workforce. Nine meetings with personnel are scheduled over the coming weeks across different German sites, according to reporting from dpa, Le Soir, and La Libre.be.

Employees at sites such as those in Saxony are looking to these upcoming sessions for perspectives, even as management insists that the manufacturer can still take the necessary measures, but it is now urgent to act.
