Volvo Chief Commercial Officer Eric Severinson has criticized the automotive industry trend of implementing subscription fees for basic vehicle hardware, stating that premium brands should not nickel-and-dime customers.

In an interview published on May 8, 2026, Severinson argued that consumers who purchase high-end vehicles should not be required to pay recurring monthly fees for standard functions. He specifically cited heated seats as an example of a feature that should not be placed behind a paywall, noting that such features are often included in significantly less expensive vehicles.

Severinson suggested that for a customer spending approximately $80,000 on a new car, a request for an additional $5 per month for basic functions is not the correct business path for a premium brand.

While opposing subscriptions for hardware already installed in the vehicle, Severinson indicated that paid models could be appropriate for more complex, software-driven offerings. He identified connectivity packages and advanced driver-assistance suites as services that could potentially be bundled into a subscription model.

Comparing these services to digital platforms like Disney+ or Netflix, Severinson noted that subscriptions can provide value when they grant access to additional content or comprehensive services. He emphasized that the primary objective for Volvo is to maintain a premium, hassle-free experience to drive long-term value and profit.

This position aligns with previous statements made by Volvo Chief Engineering and Technology Officer Anders Bell. During a 2024 roundtable, Bell expressed skepticism regarding the practice of using subscriptions to block the use of hardware that has already been physically installed in a vehicle.

Industrial Expansion and the EX60

The comments come as Volvo advances its electric vehicle strategy with the start of production for the EX60 in Gothenburg. The EX60 represents the first electric vehicle produced by the brand within Sweden.

To support this transition, Volvo has committed over $1 billion to implement megacasting technology—a large-scale die casting process—at its Torslanda plant. Severinson explained that a significant portion of this investment is dedicated to infrastructure, including the necessary machinery and buildings, which creates a foundation that can be used for future models with lower additional investment.

Volvo is applying a similar infrastructure-focused approach at its production facility in Slovakia, which was designed to accommodate future models.

Supply Chain and Platform Development

Regarding the technical specifications of its latest platforms, the company confirmed that the battery cells for the SPA3 platform are supplied from China by CATL and Sunwoda.

The strategic shift toward megacasting and localized Swedish production for the EX60 is part of a broader effort to streamline manufacturing as the company scales its electric lineup.
