Betty Yee has announced her candidacy for governor of California, positioning herself as a progressive alternative in a crowded Democratic primary field seeking to challenge Republican frontrunner Steve Hilton.

Yee, the former California State Controller and a longtime advocate for fiscal transparency and government accountability, made the announcement during a virtual town hall hosted by the California Democratic Party on April 20, 2026. She emphasized her record of uncovering waste, fighting corruption, and defending public education funding as core qualifications for the governorship.

“California deserves a governor who puts people before politics and protects our shared future,” Yee said in her announcement. “As Controller, I stood up to special interests, returned billions to taxpayers, and fought to keep our schools and hospitals strong. Now I’m running to bring that same fight to the governor’s office.”

Her entry into the race comes amid growing criticism of Hilton’s campaign, which has centered on the slogan “Make California Golden Again” and promises to cut taxes, reduce regulation, and reverse what he describes as the state’s “liberal drift.” Hilton, a former Fox News commentator and advisor to Donald Trump, has positioned himself as a political outsider capable of reshaping California’s governance.

Yee’s campaign is expected to focus on economic equity, climate resilience, and strengthening public services — areas where she has built a reputation over two decades in statewide office. She served as State Controller from 2015 to 2023 and previously held roles on the California State Board of Equalization.

Political analysts note that Yee’s announcement intensifies a Democratic primary that already includes Lieutenant Governor Eleni Kounalakis, former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and State Senator Toni Atkins. The winner of the June 2026 primary will face Hilton in the November general election.

Hilton’s campaign has not yet responded to Yee’s announcement, but his team has previously dismissed Democratic contenders as “status quo politicians” unwilling to confront California’s high cost of living and housing crisis.

Both candidates have begun early outreach to key voter blocs, with Yee targeting labor unions, educators, and environmental groups, while Hilton continues to draw support from suburban moderates, small business owners, and conservative-leaning independents.

As of April 2026, recent polling shows a competitive Democratic primary, with no candidate holding a clear lead. Yee’s name recognition from her eight years as Controller gives her an advantage in northern California and among older voters, while Villaraigosa and Kounalakis maintain strong showings in Southern California and among Latino communities.

The California gubernatorial race is expected to be one of the most closely watched in the nation, given the state’s economic size, cultural influence, and role as a national bellwether for progressive and conservative policy experiments.
