YECLA, Spain – Marc Soler of UAE Team Emirates-XRG delivered a commanding performance on , claiming victory in the shortened opening stage of the Vuelta a Murcia. The race, impacted by strong winds, was reduced to 94 kilometers, finishing in Yecla with the Alto Virgen del Castillo providing a challenging final climb.
Soler wasn’t alone in orchestrating the UAE Emirates-XRG triumph. Teammate Julius Johansen played a crucial role, joining Soler in a breakaway that formed 38 kilometers from the finish. The duo established a significant lead over the peloton, ultimately crossing the line in a one-two finish, with Soler edging out Johansen on the final ascent.
The early stages of the race saw a determined breakaway group of nine riders – including Julius Johansen, Marc Soler, Quinten Hermans, Kamil Gradek, Juan Pedro López, Raul Garcia Pierna, Jefferson Cepeda, Luca Paletti, and Héctor Alvárez – attempt to establish a foothold. They were later joined by Belgian champion Tim Wellens, extending their advantage to approximately two minutes. However, it was the coordinated attack of Soler and Johansen that ultimately proved decisive.
Wellens’ efforts were instrumental in maintaining the gap between the breakaway and the chasing peloton, allowing Soler and Johansen to build a substantial lead. As the race neared its conclusion, Soler demonstrated his climbing prowess, distancing Johansen on the steep slopes of the Alto Virgen del Castillo to secure the stage win.
While the UAE Emirates-XRG duo dominated the stage, Tom Pidcock (Pinarello Q36.5) put in a strong showing, launching an attack on the final climb to secure third place, finishing 41 seconds behind Soler. Matyas Kopecky also recorded a noteworthy top-10 finish.
The altered course, a result of the challenging weather conditions, presented a unique test for the riders. The original stage length was significantly reduced, forcing a more aggressive and condensed race dynamic. The Alto Virgen del Castillo, despite its relatively short length (1.3 kilometers at 7.4%), proved to be a pivotal point, separating the contenders and ultimately deciding the stage winner.
Soler’s victory marks a significant achievement for the rider, especially after previously securing a stage win in the Vuelta a España in . He expressed the importance of this win, noting it was his first with the UAE Team Emirates, after three years with the team.
The performance of Héctor Álvarez also stood out, showcasing his strength and determination throughout the stage. His contribution to the race was recognized by race officials.
Pidcock’s third-place finish signals a strong start to his season, which is geared towards the Tour de France. He used the Vuelta a Murcia as a warm-up for upcoming challenges, including the Clásica Jaén and Ruta del Sol stage race.
The Vuelta a Murcia continues on with further stages promising more challenging terrain and competitive racing. Soler’s victory establishes him as an early leader in the general classification, setting the stage for an intriguing battle throughout the remainder of the race.
The UAE Emirates-XRG team’s tactical execution and the individual strength of Soler and Johansen proved to be a winning combination. Their ability to capitalize on the challenging conditions and exploit opportunities within the breakaway ultimately secured a dominant victory in the opening stage of the Vuelta a Murcia.
