Volkswagen and automotive supplier Aumovio are once again receiving semiconductor chips from Nexperia, a Netherlands-based company with Chinese ownership. Initial exports have already begun, according to Ralf Brandstätter, a board member of the Volkswagen Group responsible for business in China, in an interview published today.
China Lifts Export Ban After Dutch Goverment Intervention
Beijing imposed an export ban on Nexperia products in late September after the Dutch government gained control of the semiconductor company, which is owned by the Chinese Wingtech group. The ban prompted concerns about supply chain disruptions for the automotive industry and beyond. Last week, however, China signaled its intention to grant exemptions to the export restrictions.
US-China Relations Key to Sustainable Supply
The Chinese Ministry of Commerce responded swiftly to a recent agreement with the United States by authorizing thes exemptions. Brandstätter emphasized that the speed and long-term viability of the new chip delivery process are heavily dependent on the ongoing bilateral relationship between China and the USA.Any deterioration in those relations could jeopardize the resumption of exports.
Diplomatic Efforts Facilitate Resolution
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz (CDU) discussed the Nexperia deliveries with Dutch Prime Minister Dirk Schoof on the sidelines of the international climate summit in Belém,Brazil. According to Merz, the path for resuming deliveries now appears clear, suggesting diplomatic engagement played a role in resolving the issue.
