WADA Strengthens Anti-Doping Framework and Sports Integrity in India

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) has intensified its efforts to strengthen the anti-doping framework in India, focusing on the integrity of the nation’s sports systems and the effectiveness of its testing protocols.

WADA President Witold Bańka recently held high-level discussions in New Delhi to address persistent challenges within the Indian sporting landscape. These talks centered on the need to decisively strengthen anti-doping systems and ensure a credible protection of sports integrity across the country.

High-Level Diplomatic Engagements

During his visit to Delhi, President Bańka met with Mansukh Mandaviya to discuss the sports integrity framework and the existing test systems in India. Following these meetings, Mandaviya stated that India committed to clean sport.

The discussions were characterized as urgent and serious, emphasizing the necessity of confronting ongoing challenges to maintain the credibility of athletic competitions in India.

Intelligence and Global Cooperation

As part of the broader strategy to combat doping, WADA hosted a one-day Intelligence and Investigations conference in India. This event was organized by India’s National Anti-Doping Agency (NADA) in partnership with INTERPOL and the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports.

The conference served as a platform to update stakeholders on the success of Operation Upstream, a significant effort in the fight against doping. The meeting brought together a wide array of international expertise, including representatives from law enforcement agencies and National Anti-Doping Organizations (NADOs) from 45 countries across Asia and 23 countries in Europe.

Context and Challenges

These initiatives come amid a challenging period for Indian sports integrity. Reports indicate that WADA has previously listed India as a worst doping offender, highlighting the systemic issues that the current agenda aims to resolve.

The collaboration between NADA, the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, and international bodies like INTERPOL underscores the shift toward an intelligence-led approach to anti-doping, moving beyond simple testing to active investigation and law enforcement cooperation.

The primary objectives of the current WADA agenda in India include:
