Wagner Group Fighters Confess to Killing Civilians in Ukraine

‌ Updated April 18, 2023

Two Russian men, identifying themselves as former Wagner Group ⁣commanders, have admitted to killing ⁢children and other civilians during their deployment in⁣ Ukraine. The men, Azamat Uldarov and Alexey Savichev, made these claims in video interviews with Gulagu.net, a human rights organization focused on corruption and torture in Russia.

The interviews, posted online, feature uldarov and Savichev, both⁤ former convicts who claim they received presidential pardons last year. They⁢ detailed ‌their actions during Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. While the ‍claims and identities ⁤could not be independently verified, documents confirm their release via presidential pardon in August and September 2022.

Uldarov described shooting and killing a young girl, stating it was a “management decision” and that his orders were to “kill ⁣anything” in his path. ‌Savichev recounted receiving orders to kill⁤ any males 15⁤ years or older and to “sweep” houses, regardless of civilian presence.

Gulagu.net ‍reported that⁢ the‌ testimonies were given to ‌its founder, Vladimir Osechkin, over a week while Uldarov and savichev were in Russia. Uldarov stated his motivation was to reveal the truth about the war and prevent further bloodshed.

“I want Russia and other nations to know the truth. I don’t want war and bloodshed… I followed orders with this hand and killed children,” Uldarov said.

The Wagner Group, led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, has ⁤recruited ⁣thousands of fighters from⁤ Russian prisons, promising freedom and cash after six months‍ of service. Uldarov claimed that in Soledar and‌ Bakhmut,Wagner mercenaries were ordered to “annihilate everyone” by Prigozhin ‌himself.

Uldarov has as appeared to recant his account in a video ⁢call with RIA-FAN,⁢ a Russian news agency linked to Prigozhin.

‍ “Whether a hut or a house, the point was to make sure that there wasn’t a single living person left inside,” Savichev said.‍ “You can condemn me for this. I will ⁤not object. It’s your right. But I wanted to live, too.”

Savichev also stated that Wagner fighters faced death for disobeying orders.

Prigozhin confirmed⁢ he had seen parts of the⁣ video and threatened retribution⁣ against the former fighters. He stated ‌that if any of the accusations against him were confirmed, he would be held accountable. However,if ⁤not confirmed,he ⁣would demand⁢ the extradition of his critics from Ukraine for a “fair trial.”

Prigozhin denied targeting civilians or‍ children, calling such claims “a flagrant lie” and vowing to deal with those spreading ‍them⁤ “in a special way.”

Andriy Yermak, head of ⁤the Ukrainian president’s office, tweeted that the Wagner Group must be held accountable for their actions.
