YILAN, Taiwan — As temperatures dropped to near-freezing levels, Taiping Mountain in Yilan became a hotspot for tourists eager to witness a rare snowfall. Known for its stunning views and tranquil atmosphere, the mountain attracted visitors of all ages, including a group of elderly travelers who braved the cold for a chance to experience a snow-covered wonderland.

At an elevation of 1,900 meters (approximately 6,234 feet), Taiping Mountain offers a chilly retreat, with daytime temperatures ranging between 0 and 2 degrees Celsius (32 to 35.6 degrees Fahrenheit). While snow didn’t fall during their visit, the frost-covered, foggy landscape left visitors mesmerized, with many describing it as a “fairy tale” setting.

“It’s so gorgeous,” one visitor exclaimed, capturing the moment on camera.

Adding to the excitement, a rare yellow-throated marten made a surprise appearance, captivating onlookers with its curious gaze. The protected species, seldom seen in the wild, became an unexpected highlight of the trip.

A Journey of Resilience and Joy

for a group of elderly travelers, the trip to Taiping Mountain was part of a five-day, four-night island-hopping adventure. Despite the biting cold, their spirits remained high.

“We’re vrey lucky to have reached Victoria Peak today,” said one traveler. “Even though it’s not snowing, we’re still feeling very happy and enthusiastic.”

Some visitors, undeterred by the freezing temperatures, even resorted to jogging to keep warm. “If you don’t keep moving, you’ll be shivering all the time,” one explained with a laugh.

Others shared personal milestones, like celebrating a birthday amidst the frosty landscape. “I wanted to come here to celebrate my birthday and see the snow for the first time,” said another visitor.“I’m very lucky to have experienced 0-degree weather while chasing snow.”

A Scenic trampoline and a Snowy Future

One of Taiping Mountain’s must-see attractions is its iconic trampoline, a popular spot for visitors to take in panoramic views.Though, due to damage caused by last year’s typhoons and earthquakes, access to the trampoline station has been restricted.

Despite the setback, the mountain’s natural beauty continues to draw crowds. With recent moisture levels rising, locals and tourists alike are hopeful for a snowfall in the coming days, transforming the area into a pristine, snow-white paradise.

A Winter Escape Worth the Wait

For those seeking a unique winter experience, Taiping Mountain offers a blend of natural beauty, rare wildlife sightings, and a sense of adventure. Whether it’s the frost-covered branches, the playful yellow-throated marten, or the camaraderie of fellow snow chasers, the mountain provides a memorable escape from the ordinary.

As the cold snap continues, visitors remain optimistic. “we’ll be back,” one traveler said with a smile. “Next time, we’ll catch the snow.”
