Walgreens Boots Alliance (WBA) announced on Thursday teh appointment of John Standley, former CEO of Staples, as its new chief executive officer, effective immediately. Standley replaces Tim Wentworth, who had led the company for the past two years. This leadership change comes amid ongoing challenges for Walgreens as it attempts to transform into a broader healthcare provider.

Healthcare Expansion Struggles
The management shake-up reflects Walgreens’ difficulties in expanding beyond its traditional pharmacy business. Despite important investment, efforts to diversify into broader healthcare services, notably through in-store clinics, have largely failed to gain traction, leading to store closures and efforts to reduce debt and losses.
Walgreens reportedly invested over $6 billion under former CEO Roz Brewer to secure a controlling stake in VillageMD, a physician-staffed clinic operator. The initial plan, announced in 2020, aimed to open approximately 700 “Village Medical at Walgreens” clinics across more than 30 U.S.markets by 2025 as detailed in a walgreens press release. Though, the rollout has slowed considerably due to challenges in attracting and retaining patients for the clinics.
This investment contributed to net losses exceeding $8 billion for fiscal year 2024, as reported by Walgreens according to their official financial reports. The company is now re-evaluating its strategy and focusing on cost-cutting measures.
