Walkable Neighborhoods Play a Key Role in Boosting Exercise, Study Finds

Living in a walkable neighborhood substantially increases the amount of walking people do, according to a recent national study. Researchers, examining data from nearly 11,000 twins, found a direct correlation between neighborhood walkability and increased physical activity. The study, published in the American journal of Epidemiology, revealed that for every 1% increase in an area’s walkability, neighborhood walking increased by 0.42%. This translates to roughly 23% more walking, or about 19 minutes per week, for residents in areas with a 55% higher walkability score. Researchers considered factors like the density of people, roads, stores, parks, restaurants, and coffee shops when determining an area’s walkability.
Glen Duncan, a Washington State University professor and lead author, emphasized the public health implications. “We have so manny people in the U.S. population who don’t get sufficient activity. If we could shift the percentage of the population that just took on more plain old walking, we would see real health benefits,” Duncan said.
While the study found that walkable areas didn’t significantly impact more vigorous exercise, it did show a 32% reduction in the chance of no transit use at all. Duncan pointed to Seattle’s Capitol Hill as an example of a highly walkable area, contrasting it with suburban and rural areas where driving is often necessary to access amenities.
“You don’t have to spend loads of money on fitness clothing and the best gear.Walking is a very natural thing.You just lace on some shoes and head out the door,” said Duncan.
