You don’t have to walk fast to achieve “significant” fat burning results. Many people believe that only high-intensity exercise can burn fat and loose weight. But a new study of women over 50 shows that’s not the case when it comes to walking. according to Women’s Health, researchers found that women who walked slower burned more fat than those who walked quickly. The following are the research details and analysis of the reasons.
What Did the Research Find?
This study, published in the journal “Nutrients” in January 2022, tracked 25 postmenopausal women and asked them to carry out a 15-week walking program. Nine of them ended the program after 15 weeks, and the other 16 continued for 30 weeks. All participants walked approximately 3 miles (approximately 4.8 kilometers) four days a week.
- Brisk walking group: About 4.1 miles (6.6 kilometers) per hour, 45 minutes a day
- Slow walking group: About 3.2 miles (5.1 kilometers) per hour, walking 54 minutes a day
Among the 16 women who lasted 30 weeks, the fat loss in the slow walking group was 2.73 times greater than that in the fast walking group. Even more interestingly, the fast-walking group did not lose fat until the end of 30 weeks, while the slow-walking group continued to lose fat throughout the entire process.
