At a ⁤Glance

  • What: ‌ A study shows slow walking can lead too‍ greater fat loss than ⁢brisk ⁢walking in postmenopausal women.
  • Where: Research conducted on women in a 15-30 week walking program.
  • When: Study published in the journal “Nutrients” in ‍January ‍2022.
  • Why it Matters: Challenges the common belief that high-intensity exercise is the only way to burn fat, offering a more accessible ⁤option ‌for women over 50.
  • What’s‌ Next: Further research is⁤ needed to understand the underlying mechanisms of why⁣ slow walking is so effective.

You don’t have to walk fast to achieve “significant” fat ‍burning‌ results. Many people believe that only high-intensity exercise can burn ‍fat and loose weight.‌ But a new ‍study of women over 50 ‍shows that’s not the case when it⁤ comes ‌to walking.⁢ according to Women’s Health, researchers found that⁢ women who ⁣walked slower⁢ burned more fat than ⁣those who⁤ walked quickly. ⁣The following are the research details and analysis of the reasons.

What Did the Research Find?

This study, published in ⁤the journal “Nutrients” in January 2022, tracked 25 postmenopausal women ⁢and asked them to carry⁤ out a ⁤15-week walking program. Nine of them ended the program⁤ after⁤ 15 weeks, and the other 16 continued for 30 weeks. All participants walked approximately 3 miles (approximately 4.8 kilometers) ‌four days a week.

  • Brisk walking group: ⁣ About 4.1 miles (6.6 kilometers) per hour, 45 minutes a⁤ day
  • Slow walking group: About‍ 3.2 ⁣miles (5.1 kilometers) per hour, walking 54 minutes a ⁤day

Among the 16 women‌ who lasted⁤ 30 weeks, ‍the fat loss in the slow walking ⁢group was 2.73⁢ times greater than that ⁤in⁢ the fast⁤ walking group. Even more interestingly, the⁣ fast-walking⁣ group did not lose fat until the end of 30 weeks,⁤ while the slow-walking⁤ group ⁤continued to lose fat throughout the entire process.

Why is Slow Walking More Effective at⁣ Losing⁣ Fat?

The reason is not yet completely determined. The study only observed that the slow walking group lost more fat, but did not directly prove the mechanism. The research team speculates:
