Midjourney’s new AI video tool, V1, can produce animated clips featuring copyrighted characters from Disney and Universal, raising fresh concerns amid an ongoing legal battle. The tool allows users to create short videos from uploaded or AI-generated images.
The release of this AI video generator comes shortly after Disney and Universal filed a lawsuit against Midjourney, alleging copyright violations related to the generation of images using the studios’ intellectual property. Disney’s legal head, Horacio Gutierrez, described Midjourney’s output as “piracy.”
While Midjourney appears to have implemented some safeguards, tests indicate they are not foolproof. The AI moderator blocked animations of characters like Elsa from “Frozen” and Mickey mouse. Though, the tool still generated clips of characters such as Homer Simpson, Shrek, Minions, deadpool, C-3PO, and Darth vader.
Testers were able to bypass some restrictions by using spelling variations or repeating prompts. The AI video generator also allowed users to create animations of copyrighted characters in adult situations, such as Wall-E holding a gun and Yoda smoking.
The lawsuit from Disney and universal poses a significant threat to midjourney, wich also faces copyright infringement claims from visual artists. The legal complaint argues that video capabilities would “only enhance Midjourney ability to distribute infringing copies, reproductions, and derivatives.”
