Walmart is escalating its battle with Amazon in the drone delivery service arena, extending its reach to Atlanta, Charlotte, Houston, Orlando, and Tampa. This expansion builds upon existing drone operations in Northwest Arkansas and Texas.
The retail giant is partnering with Google’s Wing to launch at 100 stores across five states: Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, and Texas. Walmart aims to solidify its position as a leader in tech-enabled retail through this initiative.
Wing’s drones can operate beyond the visual line of sight, with a range of up to six miles from the store. walmart says customers can expect deliveries in under 30 minutes.

The company noted that customers in the Dallas-Fort Worth area have integrated drone delivery into their regular shopping habits. They are eager to extend this rapid delivery option to millions more across the U.S.
“This is real drone delivery at scale,” said Wing CEO adam woodworth.
Walmart has already conducted over 150,000 drone deliveries since 2021,collaborating with Wing and Zipline. Zipline initially partnered with Walmart in 2021 to provide deliveries in Arkansas before expanding its operations. Walmart and Wing initiated their partnership in August 2023.

Walmart also offers Express Delivery, promising deliveries in 30 minutes, Late-Night Delivery, and InHome Delivery, where items are placed directly inside a customer’s refrigerator.
Meanwhile,Amazon has launched its own drone delivery services to eligible customers in College Station,Texas,and the West Valley of phoenix,Arizona. Amazon began testing its drone service in 2022 and says it is indeed streamlining the process to reach more customers.

Amazon reported record-breaking Prime delivery speeds in the first three months of 2024, with over 2 billion items arriving the same or next day to Prime members globally. In March, nearly 60% of Prime member orders in the top 60 U.S. metro areas arrived the same or next day, according to Amazon.
