A meaningful issue has been the underuse of over-the-counter (OTC) benefits, with approximately two-thirds of Medicare Advantage members failing to utilize them, resulting in billions of dollars in forfeited benefits each year.Walmart aims to address this through its omnichannel capabilities.
Ralph Clare, senior vice president, health & wellness merchandising, Walmart U.S.,said the company is adapting to offer more convenient and intuitive capabilities. He added that Walmart saw an opportunity to streamline the health benefits shopping journey, making it easier for customers to discover eligible items with convenient pickup and delivery options.
Eligible Medicare Advantage members can now add their benefit cards to their Walmart account online. A “benefits program eligible” badge will appear on eligible items, including OTC, food, and wellness products. Convenient fulfillment options include same-day pickup or delivery in as little as one hour.
Walmart is also using AI to transform healthy eating habits with the launch of Everyday Health Signals. This platform, initially designed for health plans and benefit managers, uses AI to simplify healthier eating.
Customers can opt-in to connect their Walmart.com account and receive AI-driven insights to improve their well-being. The platform analyzes a customer’s Walmart.com retail history to provide practical tips, such as nutrition analysis and shopping lists. Walmart is launching this initiative for Medicare Advantage members with NationsBenefits, where eligible members can receive free, personalized guidance aligned with their wellness goals. The platform is expected to expand to more health plans and benefits managers.
